Fairy Tales—2015 MOCA International Video Art Festival is the fourth exhibition of MOCA Video in 2015, an outdoor LED wall on the plaza of MOCA, Taipei. It is co-curated by Martin Schulze and Haily Grenet and displays outstanding video works of 25 artists from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Algeria, France, Taiwan, China, Korea and Vietnam.

“Fairy tales” originated from ancient oral tradition; they reflected human behaviors and how people conduct themselves in society through metaphors and meanings of the stories. Gradually, they became a medium of cultural exchange and knowledge communication as well as an important instrument of constructing the cultural subjectivity of each nation. The Silk Road, expanded by the Han Dynasty in the 1st century BC, enabled the economic and cultural mutual-influences between the West and the East, and played a crucial role in the progress and development of the civilizations in Europe and Asia. Today, the exchange between the West and the East has become an irreversible trend in the era of globalization while the cultural subjectivity is becoming undetermined. Being in a diverse, “contemporary” environment, the fairy tales that people get to share and exchange have also evolved.

Through curatorial efforts, Fairy Tales—2015 MOCA International Video Art Festival explores various contemporary issues stemmed from globalization: 1. Exploitation of laborers under the domination of economic powers, and the illusion and emptiness brought about by worshipping money. 2. A general sense of helplessness observed in post-modern societies, and a revisit to the spiritual value. 3. Deconstruction and re-construction of living space, spiritual symbols and the progress of civilization. 4. Social instability caused by war and violent confrontations as well as the discrimination and misunderstanding among people. 5. Mass media’s manipulation of the public mind and speech, and the sycophancy and fabrications in spectacle societies.

Through the multiple perspectives and arguments of artists from different countries, the exhibition examines the core contemporary issues. Joining the creation of the “contemporary fairy tales” today, MOCA, Taipei also invites young video artists in Taiwan to share their works and exchange ideas with the public in the events on MOCA Plaza on April 25th.
